GATES
All security gates are opened at 8:15am and locked again at 8:45am. Any child arriving at school prior to 8:15 am and remaining here after 3:15pm need to be seated outside the Performing Arts Centre, located next to the school office.
In the afternoon the gates are opened at 2:30pm and locked again at 3:15pm. Outside of these times, entry is gained via the School Office off Alfriston Road.
HEADLICE
Outbreaks of headlice periodically occur here, as in all schools. Standard procedure is to notify the school when detection occurs, administer medication immediately. We have information at school explaining treatment. Headlice are not a sign of dirty, or poor hygiene, and do not pose a major health problem, if treated early enough. One way of avoiding this problem is to keep hair tied back as often as possible. Contents page
HOMEWORK
All teachers set homework for their class. The amount varies depending on the class level of the child. In the junior rooms the children may bring a book home to read each night.
Teachers in the middle and senior classes use different approaches, either by setting homework each night, or giving an assignment which will last all week. Homework should relate to current class programmes, but if it is too hard it is of little use; too easy, of no use at all. Any homework must contribute a positive attitude towards learning or it is counter productive.
WHAT PARENTS CAN DO:
· Visit your child's class regularly to see what is going on, so you can talk about it at home.
· Encourage your child to research current study, hobbies, interests—value their ideas.
· Encourage daily reading. Read with young children.
· Help children learn words for spelling they 'nearly know'. Give credit for words 'nearly right' - this is important. Learn words by: looking-covering-writing-checking method.
· Encourage writing. Write draft copies at home. Write diaries, letters, notes, lists…..thoughts about experiences. Value nearly right words.
· Revise tables/number combinations. Take advantage of applied maths in any situation e.g. shopping, measuring, counting, sharing.
· Encourage children to complete any unfinished school work: personal language. work, illustrations, borders.
